My Clutch Project.
First a little background. I bought my car from a friend last year. It's a 92 Honda Prelude Si4WS. Since I have had the car I have noticed many things that my friends mechanic has done wrong. I believe his mechanic should be shot for doing such crappy work and actually charging for it. A few things that I have noticed before this project. The front Bumper is missing about 10 clips. He put just enough to hold it on. One of the cross members that has a total of 6 bolts holding it on only had 3! 2 on the back and one on the front. I can't remember other things right now.
So this mechanic had replaced the rear main seal and clutch about 20-30k miles before I bought the car. So I was pretty surprised when my clutch started slipping about 40k miles after I got it. I know how to drive stick well and have never burnt the clutch. So I was saving up to replace the clutch/flywheel. I figured I would rather wait a few weeks until I had enough for a racing clutch and light flywheel. The weekend before I had received my parts I was driving along, it was slipping really bad at this point, when I hear a weird noise then I have nothing I could rev the engine with no resistance at all from the clutch. So I rolled into a parking lot and it is now about 6AM on a Sunday. I called AAA and then I opened the hood and looked through the timing hold and I can see the shredded clutch. I mean it looked like the entire housing was filled. So I talked to some of the Honda people and it sounds like you are better off pulling the engine because there is hardly enough room to get the tranny in and lined up.
So a week later I start to pull the engine. Everything is going fine until I get to the shift linkage. What did that idiot mechanic do? Instead of spending the penny to buy a new cotter pin he used a nail!!! Yes a nail and bent it. It took me about 1.5hrs to get that thing off because I couldn't bend it back since it kept turning. Finally I get the engine out. Take the tranny off, pressure plate and flywheel. That clutch material was everywhere. It got all over me and it itched like crazy. Now I can see the rear main seal and it is leaking. I have never heard of one going in under 70k miles! I take the plate that holds the seal in off and what do I notice? That dick mechanic was so lazy he didn't even press the seal in all the way! It was about 2/3's of the way in! No wonder it was leaking again!
It took me days to clean the engine and tranny up since the oil was so caked on. Now I can finally put my new stuff on.
Here is what I got an Exedy Racing clutch kit and a Fidanza 8lb Flywheel. I can't wait to try it! BTW the stock flywheel is 18lbs. Here are a few pictures of what came out of the car. Captions below pictures.
Starting at the top left is the clutch material I pulled out of the bell housing, next to it on the right is what was left of my clutch plate. Bottom Left is my old Pressure plate and next to that my old Flywheel
Here is a better Picture of the clutch material
As you can see here on the Pressure plate the clutch material was everywhere. It filled the entire bell housing.
I have no clue how the hell one of the springs Broke. You can see a piece I found while cleaning the transmission.
Where is my engine? :)
My New Exedy Racing Clutch. Sooooo pretty:)
And lastly the new Exedy Pressure plate and TO Bearing below it.
